MIW Glitch

This was a personal typography experiment built around a section of “Scoring the End of the World” by my all time favorite band Motionless in White.

The song’s lyrics explore the dual nature of media and social platforms, focusing on how they can either spark collapse or offer a shot at renewal. I wanted to translate that tension into a visual experience, so I designed it to feel like a rogue emergency broadcast struggling to cut through layers of interference. That weak signal became a metaphor for how hard it is to find clarity in a world overwhelmed by hate, noise, and misinformation.

I started entirely in After Effects, but the result felt too clean and artificial. It needed something grittier. I connected with a local glitch artist who helped me set up a live analog glitch module. Once everything was hooked up, I could art direct the distortion in real time, syncing it with the emotion and pacing of the song. To push the realism further, I recorded the CRT output with my phone. This added a diegetic quality to the piece, making it feel like an actual emergency transmission captured from a damaged signal. That extra layer grounded the project and gave it the raw, imperfect energy it needed.
