Coalesce - Title Sequence

Process

Objective

This project was created as an end title sequence for Coalesce, an interactive motion design senior thesis by Nolan Acosta about how strangers form meaningful connections.

The goal was to support the emotional resolution of the experience by designing a sequence that reinforces the core message of transformation through connection, while providing a clear and reflective sense of closure.

Conceptualization

Inspired by perceptual artist Michael Murphy and his piece Perceptual Shift, I developed a concept where the fractured letters of the word Coalesce act as both visual metaphor and environment.

I pitched the idea to Nolan: the titles would emerge from within these fragmented glass forms as the 3D camera moves through them, and eventually dolly out to reveal the complete word Coalesce formed from the individual pieces.

He responded enthusiastically and asked me to begin developing motion tests and prototypes for approval.

Execution

The sequence was created using Cinema 4D, Redshift, and After Effects. I began by extruding the word Coalesce and applying a Voronoi Fracture to break it into fragmented segments. A random effector was used to introduce subtle movement among the pieces, creating a sense of controlled disarray.

As the camera moves through the fragments, the animation and perspective shift gradually aligns the segments, bringing them together into a complete and legible title.

The final composition reflects the journey from disconnection to unity, reinforcing the project's central theme.

Lessons Learned

This project deepened my understanding of how to effectively light glass in a 3D environment. I learned that using multiple area lights provides more control and clarity than relying solely on an HDRI.

If I had more time, I would have liked to further refine the glass material to push its realism and better capture the subtle imperfections and light behavior found in real-world glass.
